Is Relebohile Mofokeng ready for Bafana? Jose Riveiro weighs in

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has weighed in on whether talented youngster Relebohile Mofokeng is ready for Bafana Bafana.

Mofokeng made his debut in the Pirates senior team towards the end of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season under Riveiro.

The highly-rated midfielder was quick to introduce himself to the Pirates supporters. He played in two matches last season, scoring one goal while making one assist.

Mofokeng graduated from the Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge side after dishing out impressive performances. A few months after his promotion to the first team, Mofokeng scored himself a trial at English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.

In the current campaign, the skillful attacker has featured in 17 matches in all competitions and contributed two assists.

“I think we have talent in the team, we play with a lot of South African players,” Riveiro said.

“With the case of Rele [Mofokeng], I think the only doubt people can have is his age and experience. But if he gets a chance [to play for Bafana], he will get the opportunity to show the capacity we as coaches see at training.

“He’s a talented player, he understands football very well, he needs to improve and he’s a young player. He still needs to understand some other things that are related to the game.

“Like I said before with Karim [Kimvuidi], sometimes talent alone is not enough to cover everything that this game requires.

“But he’s working hard, I’m sure whenever he gets the chance if it’s next year or this year or whenever it happens, he’s not going to disappoint anybody.”

Pirates defeated TS Galaxy 1-0 in the league on Saturday at Orlando Stadium to move fifth on the log with 22 points.
