Rulani Mokwena’s verdict: Evaluating Bafana Bafana’s AFCON campaign

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has shared his thoughts on how Bafana Bafana performed at the recently concluded AFCON in Ivory Coast.

South Africa grabbed a bronze medal after beating DR Congo in a third-place playoff match on Saturday.

The squad consisted of nine players from Mokwena’s team – Sundowns, which currently tops the DStv Premiership and has also become one of the most respected clubs on the African continent.

The overall Bafana Bafana performance left many South Africans impressed, given the team’s recent track record in the AFCON competition.

Speaking on Radio 2000, Mokwena congratulated coach Hugo Broos and his team for their achievement.

“We can think what we want to say about the number of players that come from this team and that team and that team,” he said.

“But that team still needs to be prepared, and the team still needs to be psychologically in the right space and an understanding of the opposition and put together properly, you know. That’s huge kudos to Hugo Broos and his technical team with the analyst, Sinesipho Mali.

“The assistant coach Helman [Mkhalele]. Like any other football fan in this country and being as patriotic as I am, I think we have the right to celebrate and be proud of the achievement.”

“Even though we know we can do better. You know, we know we could have beaten Nigeria, and that’s the truth based on the performance also. They have made great strides, and they have made the entire nation happy.

“So I’m proud of our national team and relatively the success that we achieved because I think we surpassed the expectations of many people but huge kudos to everyone involved. The association [SAFA], the Bafana coach Hugo Broos and the group of players that went to represent us.”
