Cape Town Spurs cut ties with veteran defender

Cape Town Spurs have cut ties with a veteran defender who played a key role in their promotion back to the top tier of SA football, the DStv Premiership.

The Urban Warriors were promoted to the DStv Premiership in June last year after winning the PSL promotional/relegation playoffs, with Maritzburg United being relegated to the second tier.

The Cape Town-based side had been in the Motsepe Foundation Championship since 2018 after suffering relegation due to a point deduction.

This was before the club’s rebranding from Ajax Cape Town to Cape Town Spurs following the end of its relationship with Netherlands’ Ajax Amsterdam.

With a blend of experienced players and youngsters, CT Spurs were guided to the Premiership by the club’s former striker, coach Shaun Bartlett.

However, the former Charlton Athletic man was sacked in October along with his assistant coach Nasief Morris and goalkeeper coach Calvin Marlin after a poor start to the season.

Clayton Daniels, who was part of the team that won playoffs has been released by the club, FARPost has learnt.

It is understood he allegedly had a fallout with the head coach, Ernst Middendorp, resulting in the club’s decision to release him.

This season, he made 13 DStv Premiership appearances and didn’t take part in the Carling Knockout Cup.

The 39-year-old centre-back joined the Western Cape outfit at the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign after he left Maritzburg United.

He returned to the club for the second spell, having been in their development structures at a young age and with the senior team between 2007 and 2011.

Besides the Team of Choice and Spurs, Daniels also turned out for Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United.

At SuperSport, he won two Nedbank Cups, the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout Cup.
