Chiefs, Sundowns target pens new deal

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns will have to fork out a fortune to acquire the services of a highly-rated Bafana Bafana attacker.

This comes after Cape Town City FC extended the striker’s stay to guarantee that he is on their books at least until 2028.

Cape Town City FC announced on Tuesday morning that the attacker penned a three-year deal amid interest from different suitors.

Khanyisa Mayo has reportedly been on the radar of Chiefs and Sundowns. The two SA football giants are eager to beef up their squad for the 2023/24 DStv Premiership campaign.

Amakhosi have had an underwhelming campaign under Arthur Zwane. The Soweto giants lost a record 12 matches in the league during the just-ended campaign.

Kaizer Chiefs closed off their season with a disappointing 1-0 loss to CT City at FNB Stadium last Saturday.

With the Glamour Boys already signed Given Msimango, Thatoyaone Ditlhokwe and Mduduzi Mdantsane, indications are that they will be looking to bring more new faces to build a competitive team.

Meanwhile, Mayo has been in red-hot form during the 2022/23 season. He finished the campaign as joint top-goal scorer with Mamelodi Sundowns talisman Peter Shalulile.

The duo finished the season on 12 goals and they are followed by Orlando Pirates’ Monnapule Saleng.

Saleng has been nominated for Footballer of the Season award for his impressive campaign with Pirates.

CAPE TOWN CITY TIE DOWN KHANYISA MAYO WITH LONG-TERM DEAL

The contract extension will see Mayo stay with City until 2028. It means any club looking to sign him will have to fork out a hefty amount.

“Cape Town City is delighted to confirm that Khanyisa Mayo has signed a new long-term contract with the Citizens,” the club confirmed.

Additionally, with Mayo tied down to a long-term contract at City, it remains to be seen whether Chiefs will break the bank to sign the left-footed attacker.
