Baroka FC rope in ex-Bafana Bafana goalkeeper to strengthen technical team

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC have temporarily roped in a former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper in an effort to strengthen their technical team.

In recent seasons, Baroka parted ways with some experienced goalkeepers as they suffered relegation to the second-tier league in the 2021/22 season.

The likes of Oscarine Masuluke, Elvis Chipezeze, Jackson Mabokgwane, and Cyril Chibwe left the club.

With the club looking to push for promotion back to the DStv Premiership, they have brought in former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters.

Walters is set to spend the month of July at the Limpopo club assisting their goalkeeping department.

The 41-year-old Walters currently holds a FIFA Level 2 goalkeeper coaching course and has his own goalkeeper academy.

“It’s something that we felt that needed a little bit of attention. It’s just giving the experience to the goalkeepers that they have at the moment and the goalkeeper coach,” Walters told FARPost.

“My experience and the coaching badges that I have accumulated over the last year. I am very grateful to the chairman who presented this opportunity to me.

FORWARD-THINKING BY BAROKA FC

“You can see that forward-thinking if the chairman and the club. Looking to bring in experience. So yeah it’s a good idea, I would like to give the knowledge wherever I can,” he explained.

“For example, if there are any Motsepe Foundation Championship teams that do not potentially have a budget for the goalkeeper coach for the whole season but have a budget for a month just to empower the goalkeeping department.

“As much as the players and the coaching staff can learn from me I also get to learn from them. Learn the culture and different philosophies and it’s just a learning experience from both,” he said.

Walters, who was a member of the 2010 Bafana Bafana World Cup squad, says he is also pleased with the progress at his academy.

The Shuaib Walters Goalkeeper Academy currently has some players doing trials at PSL clubs, while another goalkeeper is soon to join Baroka.

“It’s going very well. We are hosting goalkeeper camps. Obviously, most of my goalkeepers come from the Randburg football club, of which I have about 35 goalkeepers.”
