Magesi make decision on ex-Pirates’ Thopola

Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has officially announced the club’s decision regarding former Orlando Pirates defender Diamond Thopola.

The 33-year-old Thopola has been training with the Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Magesi, for two weeks.

He has been on a search for a new club after parting ways with All Stars. The defender featured for the PSL club during their pre-season tournament at Baroka FC on Saturday.

Larsen confirmed to the media after the tournament that the club has roped in the experienced defender.

“We all know Diamond [Thopola]. We saw him last year when we played against All Stars. What a versatile player; he can play right back or centre half,” said Larsen.

“He is still unfit, he has only been training with us for two weeks while the rest of the boys have been back for four weeks. Diamond brings in a wealth of experience but above experience, he is just a quality footballer.

“I have worked with him before and I know what he will bring to this team. He will bring a lot of stability and it will help the youngsters as well,” he added.

Larsen has also confirmed that the club will still go into the market but couldn’t reveal the names of the targets.

“Definitely yes. We still have another winger to bring. Another attacking central midfielder and possibly a striker as well,” he said.

Larsen has also explained the absence of  Ghanaian midfielder Samuel Darpoh. The 25-year-old has lost his month and has been given Compassionate leave.

“He has just lost his mom. He couldn’t play.”

Veteran midfielder Manuel Kambala was also part of the squad that traveled to Baroka for the tournament. Vuyisile Wana is also expected to stay at the club after an impressive season during 2023/24.
