How Maseko’s Sundowns progress encourages SuperSport youth

SuperSport United youth coach Thabo September has revealed the profound impact that Mamelodi Sundowns’ rising star Thapelo Maseko has had on Matsatsantsa’s youngsters in the development ranks.

September witnessed Thapelo Maseko’s raw talent and potential firsthand while coaching him in the SuperSport DStv Diski Challenge several years ago.

Maseko’s rise to prominence saw him joining SuperSport’s senior team in 2021 from the DDC side, coached by club legend September.

The rising star then became one of the key players for SuperSport under the guidance of coach Gavin Hunt last season. He helped the club finish in third place in the DStv Premiership, netting four goals in 24 matches.

Maseko, whose captivating performances have left fans and pundits in awe, mesmerised by his exceptional skills, made a sensational move to Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the 2023/2024 DStv Premiership season.

Overall, the 21-year-old versatile player has managed to make 15 appearances for the Tshwane giants. He has scored two goals and registered one assist.

Moreover, Maseko was named the Best Player of the Tournament in the recently concluded African Football League [AFL]. In addition, he walked away with the Golden Boot award after netting two goals in the competition as Sundowns were crowned the first-ever champions.

They beat Wyad Casablanca 2-0 in the second leg of the final on Sunday in Pretoria to clinch the inaugural title 3-2 on aggregate as Morrocan giants won the first leg 2-1 at home.

Maseko’s Rise Fuels Aspirations of SuperSport Academy Prospects

In an interview with FARPost, September said that he is pleased to see Maseko’s progress at Sundowns and revealed what it means to his current aspirants.

“It’s encouraging for our current players. It gives them hope that there is an opportunity to do great things for themselves, their families, and even for the country,” said September.

“It gives others hope that if you can play for big teams like Sundowns, you can get to play in the [CAF] Champions League or continental football with other great teams. His success inspires everyone in our group.

“Look, Maseko was playing in the AFL final, that’s what we want for our young players, and we supported him. We watched him because he comes from this group. It’s great to see Maseko progressing and winning big trophies at Mamelodi Sundowns.

“When the players progress, we want them to get to greater heights and that’s what Maseko is currently doing.”

PROUD MOMENT FOR SEPTEMBER AND DEVELOPMENT CO-COACHES

September added: “It’s great, for us development coaches. It’s great to witness his [Maseko] progress. It speaks with us. It tells us what we are doing in the academy.

“I am happy together with my technical team to see Maseko’s progress. We are proud of him and his progress. He’s part of our family, and we keep in touch with him.”
