Former AmaZulu FC defender Samkelo Mgwazela trying his luck at PSL side

Former AmaZulu FC defender Samkelo Mgwazela is trying his luck at a PSL side as he continues his search for a club.

Mgwazela parted ways with AmaZulu FC at the end of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season after struggling for game time.

The 23-year-old centre-back never played a single match for Usuthu last season. He left the club mid-season in the previous campaign to undergo trials at Royal AM. However, Thwihli Thwahla opted against signing him.

Mgwazela spent three seasons at AmaZulu after joining the club in 2020 on a free transfer. The former Golden Arrows defender featured in 33 matches in all competitions during his spell with the KZN-based side.

The young defender was reportedly on the radar of both SuperSport United and TS Galaxy in the past transfer window but none of the moves materialised.

SAMKELO MGWAZELA TRAINING WITH CASRIC STARS

With Mgwazela looking to bring his career back on track, he has been training with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars with the aim of securing a contract.

Meanwhile, Casric Stars lost one of their key players in the heart of defence, Sihle Gum who joined the University of Pretoria at the start of the season.

The Mpumalanga-based outfit has had a slow start to the new season in the NFD as they sit ninth on the log with 16 points. Stars won four games in the league, drawing four while losing on four occasions in 12 games played.

Stars came close to gaining promotion to the DStv Premiership last season but they lost out in the PSL Promotion/Relegation playoffs.

Cape Town Spurs brushed aside Casric Stars and Maritzburg United in the playoffs to gain promotion to SA’s top flight.

The poor start of the new season prompted Casric Stars to fire their head coach Ashwin Sutton last month and replace him with Sundra Govender.

It remains to be seen whether Mgwazela will do enough to earn a deal with Stars in the second-tier league.
