FARPost.co.za caught up with KZN academy graduate and Vitoria Setubal left back Nkanyiso Shinga to get details about his new and improved contract that he has signed at the Portuguese outfit.
Shinga, 19, joined Vitoria Setubal last season and impressed for their u19 development squad.
He has since been also promoted to the club’s u23 development squad and the defender is very pleased.
“I think it’s a good opportunity I’m very happy because it’s the fruits of my hard work, football is not easy and sometimes we come across many challenges so for me to get the new contract is amazing because honestly I had a good season last season,” reflected Shinga.
When asked how he got the news of a new contract and how excited was he to get the news he replied, “If I remember well I was in the national u20 camp for the World Cup (this year in Poland) and I had just got the news that I did not make the final national team squad for the World Cup.
“So I went back to Portugal because we had three games left in the regular season and we were in the relegation zone. I played all three games, I scored 2 goals and had two assists we drew 1 game and won two of those three remaining games to survive relegation so I can say I played a big role in the team surviving relegation. My club saw me as an asset then offered me an extension”.
Asked about his targets this season he said, “My target this season is to go another step up and be promoted to the first team of the club because Setubal is a big club with a lot of good history so I think this season will be a great season even though the u23s is a new environment to me but I need to get used to it quickly and get going.”
Shinga is one of many South Africans who are based in Portugal with the European country seemingly becoming a favourite starting base for many young South African players.
Surely the left back has made good strides since leaving KZN academy and this season he will be hoping to make his first team football debut.
