Sao Tome ePrincipe has picked the best possible squad to face South Africa in the AFCON 2021 qualifier on Friday evening (21H00) in Durban.
The minnows have players based in Portugal, Georgia, Mexico and some that are home based who have been doing well in the local leagues. FARPost looks at the three players that Bafana Bafana need to be wary of going into the game.
LUIS LEAL DOS ANJOS
One of the oldest members of the squad, the attacker is a journeyman who has played in countries all over the world. Born in Portugal in 1987, Anjos has played in Portugal, Argentina, Turkey and now he is with Mexican top division side, Tijuana. The striker has scored a total of 74 career goals in 229 games and the South African defence will need to be on high alert to keep out the 33-year-old hitman.
Another striker who has made his name in Portugal, Quieta was born in Sao Tome in 1990 and moved to Portugal’s lower tiers to join União Montemor. The striker had a great start to life in Portugal and by 2013 he had attracted interest from SL Benfica who signed him. He struggled to break into the first team and moved to the Segunda Liga. The striker has played in several clubs in Portugal, including Mafra, Real Massama, Leixoes, Tondela, Covilha, Farense and now Estoril who play in the Segunda Liga. In over 200 professional appearances Quieta has scored 47 league goals and he will be hoping to have his scoring boots on against Molefi Ntseki’s man at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
A product of Portuguese Primeira Liga side Maritimo the 25-year-old midfielder plays with Portuguese third division side Real Massama where he has featured for five games having recently joined them.
The midfielder featured more than 70 times for Maritimo since coming through their youth system playing for the B team until the first team. He is the glue that makes the midfield tick for the minnows who gave the ‘Black Stars’ of Ghana a hard time last time out.
