Mathathai crowned KwaMahlobo champs


Orlando Mathathai were crowned champions of the 2019/20 LaLiga KwaMahlobo games for a second time in a row after a memorable final against Meadowlands All Stars.

The thrilling encounter concluded yet another highly successful edition of the LaLiga-sponsored tournament that saw record crowd attendance from the community of Soweto and surrounding areas.

After a gruelling group and knockout stage, the tournament concluded with Meadowlands All Stars, Braamfischer Tsalanang, Hungry Lions and the defending champions battling it out in the semi-finals at a packed to capacity KwaMahlobo grounds.

The first semi-final saw crowd favourites, Meadowlands All Stars facing Braamfischer Tsalanang in an evenly balanced encounter which was decided by a last minute goal for All Stars to secure their place in the finals.

In the second semi-final, Hungry Lions were determined to cause an upset after holding the defending champions to a goalless but highly entertaining match which had to be decided by the lottery of penalties for Mathathai to clinch 5-4.

The stage was then set for the grande finale between Mathathai and the home side, Meadowlands All Stars.

With both sides matching each other pound for pound, it was Mathathai again who emerged victorious with a 8-7 dramatic penalty victory to clinch the title which was accompanied by a R120 000 prize money for the second year running.

Runners up, Meadowlands All Stars walked away with R50 000 while Tsalanang and Lion each took home R15 000 in prize money.

Outside of the exciting football, LaLiga pulled out all the stops to ensure that the fans enjoy a memorable day which was filled with great performances by various artists, musicians and LaLiga branded merchandise.

Speaking after the finals, LaLiga South Africa Managing Director, Marcos Pelegrin lauded the community of Soweto for coming out in their numbers to enjoy the spectacle.
