A life line for Cele, tragedy for Shinga

KZN academy graduates Thabo Cele and Nkanyiso Shinga are both affected by a decision that’s been taken by the Portuguese LigaNos leadership that has resulted in Vitoria Setubal and Desportivo Aves being taken down to the Portuguese third division for the 2020/21 season.

Nkanyiso Shinga’s Vitória de Setúbal and Desportivo das Aves have been forcefully relegated down to the Campeonato de Portugal, the third tier of Portuguese football, after failing to meet the necessary requirements for professional registration ahead of the 2020/21 season.

After failing to submit the necessary documentation and follow proper protocol to participate in the 2020/21 professional season on time the two clubs will now participate in the campeonato.

The decision forbids both sides from competing at a professional level – although Vitória and Aves have appealed.

This comes shortly after Vitória avoided relegation to the second division on the last day of the season defeating SAD Belenenses 2-0 away from home sending Portimonense down the Segunda Liga instead.

On the other hand, Desportivo Aves were already set for relegation after finishing last in the Primeira Liga table and things could worsen with financial troubles likely to plunge the club further down the footballing pyramid.

As a result of the punishment, this means Portimonense’s status as a top-flight club was reinstated with Thabo Cele’s Cova da Piedade and Casa Pia back into the second division.
