A winning debut for Smeda in Portugal

Most leagues might be on a winter break, but a few leagues continued this weekend. FARPost wraps up how some of Mzansi’s footballers abroad performed this past weekend.

The former Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder was involved in his first ‘Old Firm’ derby as Glasgow Rangers got a narrow 1-0 win against their rivals Glasgow Celtic this past Saturday. Zungu was introduced after 87 minutes of the game as Callum McGregor’s own goal gave the home side the win.

Singh continued his record of playing every league game so far in Portugal. The 23-year-old started and played 89 minutes as Pacos Ferreira continued their good run of form in the league with a 2-0 victory at home against Rio Ave on Sunday night. The Stars of Africa graduate is still looking for his second goal of the season to add to his one goal and one assist so far this season.

It was a happy debut for Smeda in the Portuguese top flight on Sunday. The Banyana Banyana midfielder was introduced in the 70th minute of the game for Famalicao as they beat Gil Vicente 3-1 to stay top of the table. Smeda has recently made the switch to Portugal after a good season in Sweden with Vittsjo GIK.

Seoposenwe was a second half substitute for SC Braga as they defeated Flaes 3-1 in the league to continue their hot pursuit of top spot. Braga remains just three points behind log leaders Famalicao  who also won on Sunday against Gil Vicente.

Kodisang continued his good form this season with yet another goal for Braga B. The South African U23 international netted the first goal as Braga defeated CDC Montalegre 2-1 in the third division on Sunday afternoon.

Former Supersport United captain Dean Furman came on after 75 minutes for Carlisle United as they defeated Walsall 2-0 in the English League Two on Saturday evening. The 32-year-old has struggled to cement his place in the starting XI since his move back to England last season.

Chislett came on after 68 minutes for AFC Wimbledon as they lost 2-1 against Lincoln City in England’s League One on Saturday. The attacking midfielder has had a good start to professional football as he has often been the difference for the lower league club when they needed him to step up.

Shibane was in action for CD Agueda as they narrowly lost 1-0 away at São João de Ver in the Portuguese Campeonato league on Sunday afternoon.
