KwaZulu Natal champions Umvoti caused an upset in the ABC Motsepe League promotion play-offs following a 1-0 win against Northern Cape Champions Hungry Lions at the Vaal University of Technology on Monday.

Lions were the favourites coming into the match given the experienced players in the team such as Moses Spandeel and Rudiger Gilbert.

But it took a second half strike by Umvoti defender Tshanini Fakale to secure full points for the KZN side.

The result mean Umvoti now lead Group A on the opening day of the play-offs.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Rudiger Gilbert.

Although Hungry Lions lost the match, they were the dominant side and the 33-year-old Gilbert was responsible for controlling the midfield, but the club was just unfortunate not to at least get a draw or maximum points.
