The 2020 ABC Motsepe National playoffs got underway under bright Vaal skies on Monday morning with six teams in action on day one in Gauteng at the Vaal University of Technology.
Five goals were scored on day one with two coming from Bizana Pondo Chiefs exciting midfielder Ayanda Khunta as he led the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League provincial champions to a narrow 2-1 victory over Mangaung Unite.
Khunta’s work rate is unmatched and he was the star of the opening day with two first half goals to give Pondo the perfect start in their quest to reach the finals of the national playoffs and compete in the GladAfrica Championship for the 2020/21 season.
It is no surprise that he walked away with the Man of the Match award for his brilliant effort in leading his side to victory and top position in Group B with his stunning brace.
The calm and skilful midfielder, Khunta caused the Mangaung defence all sorts of problems and posed a threat every time he was in position for Pondo. He was excellent in midfield. He looked fit, confident and skilful in possession.
Khunta, 25, will be looking to extend his goal tally and create frequent goalscoring opportunities when Pondo Chiefs tackle Mikhado in the first match of day two at 10:00 on Tuesday morning.
In the other matches, Hungry Lions will face Mpumalanga United at 12:00 while in the final game of the day, Zizwe United will play Polokwane City Rovers at 15:00.
The playoffs will run from 9-14 November with the winners set to take home a trophy and a whopping R1 million in cash, while the runners-up will collect a purse of R500,000. The two finalists will gain promotion to the newly-branded second-tier league, GladAfrica Championship.
