Liverpool have progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Uefa Champions League.
The Reds romped to a 2-0 victory at Anfield Stadium and it was their two African stars Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane who netted the two goals. Coincidentally, it was the duo who netted for the English champions in the first leg of the tie.
Leipzig dominated the first few minutes of the encounter and could have gone ahead on a few occasions, but Allison Becker stood tall between the posts to deny the German side.
Salah came close to opening the score sheet in the 23rd minute, but he was denied by Peter Gulasci. The Reds went ahead with 20 minutes left on the clock as Salah lashed onto a ball by Diogo Jota who came in and made a big difference up front.
Four minutes later, Divock Origi did some good work down the right wing before crossing the ball for an unmarked Mane who tapped in from close range to give the Reds a 2-0 lead on the night. Jurgen Klopp’s side went through with an aggregate score of 4-0.
Salah has now scored 25 goals in all competition and is Liverpool’s main man up front.
Liverpool will hope to take their form to the Premier League where they have been struggling to win games in recent weeks. They travel to the Midlands to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night in the league.
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain drew 1-1 with FC Barcelona to progress to the last eight. Kylian Mbappe put the hosts ahead after 30 minutes before Lionel Messi equalised for the visitors seven minutes later. The Argentine missed a penalty right before half time as the French side went through with a 5-2 aggregate having won the first leg 4-1 at Camp Nou.
Last season, PSG lost to Bayern Munich in the final as they continue to fight for glory in Europe’s biggest competition.
