Just two seasons ago Burkina Faso youngster Lassina Traore was playing for Ajax Cape Town’s youth side, but now he is lightening up the Dutch top-flight with giants Ajax Amsterdam.
The 19-year-old left Ajax CT for Amsterdam in 2019 and started playing for the club’s B team where he scored 21 goals in 31 games before being promoted to the first team due to his prolific efforts in front of goal for Jong Ajax. Traore has played 16 first team league games and scored 7 goals in the process.
He has done well since being promoted with a goal almost every two games, but it was this past weekend against Venlose Voetbal Vereniging (VVV) that he announced himself to the world scoring five goals and assisting a further three as Amsterdam demolished VVV 13-0 in the Eredivisie on Saturday away.
With Mohammed Kudus out, this has provided the Burkinabe teenager with a perfect opportunity to lay claim to a starting XI place in coach Erik Ten Hag’s team for the remainder of the year and possibly the season.
Just 12 minutes into the game the Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) born attacker laid an assist for Jurgen Ellekenkamp who made no mistake to open the scoring for Ajax and five minutes later Traore lashed on to Antony’s ball to slot home for Ajax’s second of the game.
From that point, all the players got in on the act with Dusan Tadic, Huntelaar, Martinez and Daley Blind all among the scorers.
Ajax will tackle Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening and Traore’s name is expected to be amongst the first names on the team sheet.
