The South Africa Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan says Al Ahly’s popularity has increased due to Pitso Mosimane.
Mosimane has managed to somewhat replicate his achievements in South Africa with the Cairo giants – guiding them to the treble last season despite being in Egypt for only five months.
The 56-year-old coach guided the Ahly to the 2020 Caf Champions League title over arch-rivals Zamalek. He went on to lead the ‘Reds’ to a historic Club World Cup bronze medal after beating Copa Libertadores champions Palmeiras in Qatar.
Jordaan is proud of his compatriot, saying that Ahly is now well-known in Southern Africa.
“Now everyone in South Africa knows Al Ahly, and with Pitso Mosimane as a head coach, the club’s popularity has increased,” Jordaan told ONTime.
“Everyone knows the club of the century and the best club in the African continent, and the mentality and skills of their officials and players.
“When they won against Palmeiras, it was a wonderful start for them towards the world stage and a lesson for all,” he added.
As Ahly head coach, Mosimane has won 21 of the 27 matches in charge while suffering just two defeats.
The former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns coach will now hope to put Ahly back on track in the CAF Champions League as they are set to host AS Vita Club on Saturday.
