The South African U17 national team opened their 2020 COSAFA Cup with a 2-0 win against eSwatini on Thursday afternoon in Port Elizabeth.
It’s a great start for coach Vela Khumalo and his technical team who will be pleased to kick off the tournament on a high.
South Africa started the game on a high controlling the first half and they were awarded in the 38th minute with Thabang Mahlangu giving the hosts the lead.
Man of the Match Mduduzi Shabalala pulled the strings in the middle of the park dictating the tempo and making the team tick.
The visitors came back stronger in the second half with goalkeeper Enrique Erasmus the big difference after saving a number of one-on-one chances to prevent eSwatini from equalizing.
Second half substitute Yamkela Phalane sealed the three points for Amajimbos in the 78th minute with a well taken penalty as the home side began the tournament with a crucial win.
The final two teams in the tournament qualify for the 2021 U17 AFCON in Morocco.
