AmaZulu fight back to hold Pirates

AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates opened their 2020/21 DStv Premiership campaigns with a 1-1 draw at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium on Saturday evening.

The home team, Usuthu came back to claim a spare of the spoils against a new-look Pirates side.

In the 18th minute, Siphesihle Ndlovu was brought down on the edge of the box by Sibusiso Mabiliso for a free-kick but the decision was overturned after a lengthy discussion between the referee and his assistant. Gabadinho Mhango then stepped up and converted from the spot to make it 1-0.

Despite a free-flowing game, tempers were so high that the two teams came close to blows on two occasions inside the first 30 minutes in Durban with both sides calling for members of the opposition to be sent off.

Amid the drama, AmaZulu found the equaliser through veteran striker Lehlohonolo Majoro. The referee pointed to the spot once again, this time in favour of the home side after Luvuyo Mamela was caught by the swinging arm of Fortune Makaringe inside the box.

Wayne Sandilands saved Majoro’s penalty but the former Bafana Bafana international scored from the rebound just after the half-hour mark.

The teams will return to DStv Premiership action this coming midweek, with AmaZulu away to TS Galaxy away and Pirates hosting Stellenbosch – both on Wednesday.
