AmaZulu have been acquired by the Zungu Investment Company (Zico) and the new owners have admirable and lofty ambitions for the KwaZulu Natal outfit as they “want to build the club to be the number one team in the country.”
The Zungu Investment Company completed its takeover from Dr Patrick Sokhela on Friday, acquiring 100% ownership of AmaZulu.
However, the acquisition will only be effective upon the approval by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and other pertinent authorities and constituencies.
Sandile Zungu‚ chairman of Zico and the new AmaZulu President addressed the media on Friday at the Hilton Hotel in Durban.
“Our responsibility as owners is to build the club to be the number one team in the country. AmaZulu is arguably the strongest soccer brand in this country, not only the oldest team at 88 years old,” said Zungu.
“AmaZulu have got to be the number one team in this country come the year of our centenary in 2032.
“If we don’t win the league in the next four years, we would have failed,” added Zungu as AmaZulu flirted with relegation at the end of the previous campaign.
‘Usuthu’ are the third Premier Division franchise sold in the 2019/20 off-season. The other Premiership deals concluded were Bidvest Wits to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) and Highlands Park to TS Galaxy.
Zungu has backed newly appointed head coach Ayanda Dlamini to lead the team into the new phase.
“The commitment to Ayanda is unequivocal. The commitment for those players who want to fight with their boots on is unequivocal,” Zungu told the media on Friday.
“If he wants to strengthen the team in certain departments he must speak to me and not the media.”
The Zico chairman went on to reveal that he has been trying to buy AmaZulu for more than a decade.
“I think it’s been the climax of a long journey. We’ve accomplished it after 14 years of courtship. I’m very pleased to be here.
“Soccer is a game I love, it’s a game of the people, and I approach it with a lot of confidence that we’ll make a difference. We’re very excited,” he concluded.
