Arrows claim bragging rights in KZN derby

Golden Arrows collected their first three points of the season, when they brushed aside Maritzburg United 2-1 at Princess Magogo Stadium.

The hosts survived numerous scary moments in the first half, with Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Rowan Human, Zukile Kewuti and Richard Zumah all threatening Arrows last line of defence.

Hlongwane’s pace proved to be a challenge for the likes of Sbonelo Cele and Nkosinathi Sibisi. The Bafana Bafana striker has forged a good understanding with Zumah.

Sifiso Mlungwana and Sibisi had to be on high arlet to deal with Kewuti and Human strikes which were goal-bound.

Maritzburg looked dangerous whenever they had the ball and they tested Mlungwana, with some balls hitting the woodwork.

Arrows also had some fair share of chances with Pule Mmodi, Nduduzo Sibiya and Micheal Gumede missing chances.

Arrows enjoyed much of goal possession but they did not utilize it fruitfully in terms of hitting the target.

Ernst Middendorp made one change during half time, replacing Richard Zumah with Brandon Theron, while Lehlohonolo Seema brought in Siboniso Conco and Thabani Zuke for Nqubeko Dlamini and Nduduzo Sibiya.

The second half started like a house on fire with both teams launching quick attacks going forward.

It was in the 54th minute when Conco found the back of the net, after a splendid run from deep.

He connected very well to beat Engelhardt from awkward angle, after a pass from Thabani Zuke.

Arrows looked like they found their rhythm with more attacks and confident moves in the Maritzburg half.

Soon it paid off when another substitute Siphamandla Sabelo curled a free kick towards the near post to beat Engelhardt and give Arrows a 2-0 lead.

A double change for Maritzburg bringinging Lelethu Skelem and Lifa Hlongwane on for Human and Claasen signaled intent to take the game to Arrows.

Both benches made some interesting changes towards the last 20 minutes of the match and they changed the complexion of the match.

In the dying minutes of the match Theron found the consolation goal for Maritzburg after some great passing game from Skelem and Lefa Hlongwane.
