FC Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala has undergone a successful foot surgery in Spain.
The Nigerian forward had to go under the knife to fix a recurring injury that has been giving her problems since the beginning of the year. Barcelona’s medical team initially thought the knock didn’t require surgery, but after Oshoala aggravated it again during training last week, a decision was taken for her to go through surgery at the Barcelona medical facility on Tuesday.
She could only watch from the bench as Barcelona thrashed Levante 7-1 last weekend to extend their lead at the top of the Primera Division table.
Oshoala has been the club’s best striker this season. She has netted 15 goals in the Spanish top-flight so far.
The club released a statement confirming that the attacker will be out for a few weeks after the operation.
“According to the Club’s Medical Services, player Asisat Oshoala underwent surgery on her right foot on Tuesday.
“The player had been suffering from discomfort for a few weeks, which had caused her to miss a game, such as the one at Santa Teresa.
“The intervention was given by Dr Dalmau, under the supervision of the Medical Services of FC Barcelona. The recovery of the player will mark her return to the field of play.”
Since joining the Blaugrana permanently from Chinese side Dalian Quanjian in 2019, the striker has netted 33 league goals in 32 appearances. She has also featured for big clubs in Europe like Liverpool and Arsenal before making her way to one of the biggest clubs in Spain.
At international level, she currently captains the Nigerian national team and played a big role in their 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations triumph in Ghana where the Super Falcons needed penalties to overcome Banyana Banyana.
Oshoala has netted 29 international goals for her country.
