Aubameyang fires Gabon to Afcon 2021

Gabon qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in fine style.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was on target as Gabon romped to a 3-0 victory against the Democratic Republic of Congo to book their ticket at the continental showpiece in Cameroon.

Aaron Boupendza opened the scoring after 44 minutes for the home side who dominated possession for majority of the first half. The Turkish-based attacker dribbled past three defenders before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the box to give the home side the lead.

Congo started the second half well, but failed to create scoring chances and they were punished in the 72nd minute by Denis Bouanga who benefitted from a defensive mistake at the back to extend the home sides’ advantage, 2-0.

With four minutes left on the clock, Aubameyang made it 3-0 to Gabon. The Arsenal star lashed onto a beautiful through ball by Guelor Kanga and scored from close range.

The result took Gabon to the top of Group D with 10 points in five games.

After defeating Angola 1-0, Gambia took the second qualification spot in the group. Both sides have 10 points, but Gabon have a superior head-to-head.

On Monday , Gabon will play Angola away from home while Gambia will travel to Kinshasa to face DR Congo. The results from match day six will determine who finishes top of the group.

Elsewhere, Algeria ended Zambia’s Hope’s of reaching the finals in Cameroon. The two sides played out to a thrilling 3-3 draw. Patson Daka netted a brace for Zambia, but it wasn’t enough to get three points.
