Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has made the English Premier League Team of the Week after two stellar performances in the league.
The 26-year-old had a slow start to the 2020/21 season mostly due to recurring injuries that kept him out of action for a few months. Even when given a chance the centre back seemed to be struggling to form a formidable partnership with Harry Maguire at the back.
In a change of fortunes, the former English Champions seem to have turned the corner in the league and so has Bailly who has been playing with confidence at the back towards the end of 2020.
In the three recent league games against Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, the centre back has put in some solid shifts which has seen him voted to be amongst the best players in the division at the start of 2021.
In 2011, at the age of 17, the Ivorian left his native country to move to Spain after being scouted by RCD Espanyol scouts. He initially played with the club’s reserve team before being promoted to the first team in 2014 where he played five league appearances in La Liga.
In 2014 Villareal signed him for 7 million Euros and he went on to play 35 league games for the ‘Yellow Submarine’ before moving to England to join United.
He has made 59 league appearances since his arrival at the club. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been struggling to have a consistent centre back pairing over the past few months, but the recent results have provided him with some stability with Bailly and Maguire seeming to have developed a great understanding.
With Liverpool losing 1-0 to Southampton on Monday night, Solskjaer’s charges now have an advantage of a game in hand over their rivals. The two teams both have 33 points, but Liverpool sit on top of the table due to a superior goal difference while United is second.
Ralph Hasenhuttl of Southampton was voted as the head coach of the week while the rest of the squad includes players like Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Manchester City duo Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne, Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Southampton hero Danny Ings.
