Bailly’s future at United hangs in the balance

According to reports, Eric Bailly is not going to sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

ESPN reports that the Manchester United defender will snub the club’s offer of a new deal as he grows more and more frustrated with his lack of game time. Since arriving at United, the Ivory Coast defender has only managed to make 100 appearances for the Red Devils and he has made just 15 appearances this season.

A lot was expected when Bailly became Jose Mourinho’s first signing when the Portuguese manager arrived at the club. He signed a long-term deal with the club from Villarreal in 2016, but things haven’t gone according to plan with the defender struggling to cement a place in the starting line-up.

That has been due to recurring injuries and him recently testing positive for Covid19 while on international duty which has proved costly for his overall game time at the club.

Reports have indicated that despite United looking to offer him a new deal, the centre back is considering rejecting that contract because of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preference of Victor Lindelof as the first choice centre back pairing alongside club captain Harry Maguire.

Bailly was left out of the squad that did duty against Granada in the second leg of the Uefa Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford on Thursday night. The former English champions won 2-0 on the night which propelled them to a 4-0 aggregate win since they had already won 2-0 in the first leg of the tie.

Solskjaer has been applying a rotation policy this season switching between Maguire, Lindelof and Bailly.
