Bamenda nowhere near PSL standard – Hunt

Frustrated, dejected, crestfallen and annoyed, are some of the adjectives that can be used to describe Gavin Hunt’s mood after his troops were held to a goalless draw by PWD Bamenda in the Caf Champions League second leg at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

What bothered and irritated Hunt the most was that Chiefs found it difficult against a Cameroonian side he believes is nowhere near a Premier Soccer League (PSL) standard of play.

Despite struggling to score goals, a problem which continues to frustrate Hunt, ‘Amakhosi’ managed to advance to the first round of the continental competition with a 1-0 aggregate win after their win in the first leg in Cameroon last week.

Chiefs will now meet Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto in the first round on 22 December at FNB Stadium. The return leg will be in Angola on 6 January.

“You get two clean sheets home and away, but you also got to look at the opposition,” said Hunt.

“Let’s be fair, no way near PSL standard, but we’ve got to be better, you cannot be creating opportunities and it’s just the final pass, it’s been like a lot of the season, so tough team, physically tough but we opened them up a lot of times home.”

Hunt described the match as “dull” and went on to point to his team’s inability to score goals.

“Disappointing game, you can’t be missing the chances we get and the opportunities we get in front of goals, in all my 30 years of coaching I have never seen anything like it. So, it is disappointing, but the most important thing is to get through,” added Hunt.

“The chances we created, the score could have been whatever, we had so many opportunities, the second half the same and you got to score, we are not scoring so it has been a problem the whole season and you cannot expect to keep clean sheets every week if you are not scoring the goals with the chances we had.

“We expect a little bit more, but it is what it is. (I take) nothing (out of this game) we just go to the next game and try and go far from there.”

Chiefs will now shift their attention to the DStv Premiership when they welcome Black Leopards to FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.
