Banyana Banyana have moved up two places to number 53 in the latest FIFA World Rankings that were released on Friday.
A victory over neighbours Lesotho in a recent international friendly at Tsakane Stadium saw South Africa step up on the FIFA rankings despite their aspiration of making their third successive Olympic Games ending as they bowed out of the CAF Women’s Olympic Games Qualifiers last September after suffering 3-2 defeat against Botswana in the second round of the 2020 Tokyo qualifiers.
Banyana remain third on the African continent while Cameroon retained second spot despite dropping two places to 51st in the world rankings with the African Champions Nigeria moving one place to 38th and keeping the top spot as Africa’s top-ranked side.
Completing the top five are Ghana and Ivory Coast with Gambia becoming the newest addition to the world rankings at number 113.
After qualifying for the Women’s Olympic football tournament for the first time in their history following a shock win over Cameroon [4-4 on aggregate – won on away goal], the Shipolopolo of Zambia made the biggest move up by any country.
The Copper Queens of Zambia moved up six places to 100th in the World and just outside the top 10 in Africa as they occupy 12th place.
Zambia come out as the most improved nation in the last three months and earned 31 points for their efforts.
According to FIFA, the next Women’s World Rankings will be published on 26 June 2020.
