Banyana Banyana have suffered a 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their 2021 Cosafa Women’s Championship semi-final clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Desiree Ellis named an unchanged line-up for the semi-final encounter from their last group stage game against Mozambique.
Befitting the significance of the fixture, there was a frantic tempo to the early proceedings as both sides sought to harass each other into errors with an intense high press.
As the half progressed, the visitors were making the vast majority of the running which resulted into a goal courtesy of Fazila Chembekezo in the 37th minute.
Momentum seemed set to swing in the defending champions’ favour, as Sibulele Holweni found an equalizer for the host nation just before the half-time break.
Having witnessed an eventful opening 45 minutes, the showdown went into the interval with a 1-1 scoreline.
In the second half, the Malawians were more than a match for Banyana, defending stoically to limit the attacking threat of the home side.
Having regained possession in the opposition half, Malawi restored their lead through Sabinah Thom in the 73rd minute.
Coach Ellis’ troops started chasing the game with Gabriela Salgado’s free-kick attempt going over the crossbar.
In the 80th minute, Holweni once again levelled matters as she scored her second goal of the day from a penalty spot after Melinda Kgadiete was brought down inside the box.
Just five minutes after the restart, Thom completed her brace to put Malawi back in the lead.
Unfortunately, Banyana bow out of the Cosafa Cup tournament with heavy hearts.
