Banyana Banyana have cruised their way into the 2021 Cosafa Women’s Championship semi-finals after thrashing Mozambique at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Desiree Ellis’ side defeated neighbours Mozambique 3-1, thanks to goals by Melinda Kgadiete and Sibulele Holweni, who scored a brace.
South Africa came into this game gunning for maximum points after dropping two points in their goalless draw against Angola last Friday.
The host nation were on the front foot from the opening kick with a heavy dose of ball possession.
Twenty-three minutes into the match, Holweni broke the deadlock to put Banyana in front.
However, Mozambique set up shop in Banyana’s end but did not relent throughout the first 45 minutes.
The visitors kept struggling to unlock the home side’s defence as the back four setup continued to stymie Mozambique in the second stanza.
In the 63rd minute of the showdown, Mozambique skipper Cina Manual scored an equalizer with a beautiful header.
Just five minutes after the restart, Melinda Kgadiete restored the lead for South Africa.
As they say, it never rains but pours, a reference to Mozambique’s mischief as Holweni netted her second goal of the day in 76th minute to make it 3-1.
At the end of the day, however, the defending champions put in a dominant effort against the Mozambiquan side.
With all being said, Banyana finished top of Group A with seven points after three games to seal their semi-final spot.
