Banyana Banyana kicked off the 9th edition of the 2021 Cosafa Women’s Championship with an impressive 2-1 win over Malawi in Gqeberha.
The game took place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Banyana steamed into the contest looking more dangerous as they broke the deadlock in the second minute of the showpiece through Melinda Kgadiete.
As the first half progressed, the match became a tight battle, end to end, between the two sides – with Malawi getting more physical.
However, the unfazed Desiree Ellis side were back in the driving seat searching for the second goal.
In the 37th minute, a deflected shot by Noxolo Cesane led to another goal for South Africa.
The showdown went into the interval with the host nation leading the Malawian side with a two-goal advantage.
After an eventful first 45 Minutes, the second stanza began on a cagey start, both sides settling into a slower rhythm, but it was Banyana who looked more alive.
Banyana started losing concentration as the second half was coming to an end with Malawi piling pressure on them.
The visitors’ fighting spirit earned them a consolidation goal in the 89th minute from Wezzie Mvula.
At the end, it was Banyana who managed to collect all the much-needed three points in their opening Group A clash of the 2021 Cosafa Women’s Championship.
