Banyana striker signs first professional deal in Spain

Banyana Banyana striker Amanda Mthandi has signed her first professional contract with Spanish Club Deportivo Badajoz Femenino for the 2020/21 league campaign.

Mthandi joins CD Badajoz from SAFA National Women’s League (SNWL) and Sasol League side University of Johannesburg Ladies.

In a media statement, CD Badajoz competing in the Primera Nacional Femenina said, “The club has reached an agreement with South African international Amanda Mthandi for next season. The player signs for a campaign with an option for a second one.

“Mthandi comes from the Johannesburg to be a reference in the front and contribute goals that give a plus to the team led by Bea Galán. She is an international player for Banyana Banyana and a reference in the attack of the teams in which she plays.”

“The 24-year-old leaves her country for the first time although she already knows our football because she faced the National Team in the last FIFA Women’s World Cup (Spain 2-1 South Africa, 8/6/2019),” – CD Badajoz. Picture: FIFA.

The Soweto-born star will look to make a good impression in her maiden professional season in Europe and help her side secure promotion to Primera Iberdrola – top division.

Affectionately known as ‘Speedy’, Mthandi is the fourth South African woman to join a Spanish outfit after Ode Fulutudilu, Jermaine Seoposenwe and Nothando Vilakazi.

Mthandi turned out for Banyana Banyana in their maiden Women’s World Cup in France last year and scored on her national team debut against debut Equatorial Guinea during the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Ghana and won the 2019 COSAFA Women’s Championship.
