Barker abandons Moon landing

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has explained his last minute decision not to bring on striker Ryan Moon against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday night.

The former Amakhosi marksman was getting ready to come on for his side before Barker changed his mind and brought in midfielder Nyiko Mobbie instead.

Stellenbosch were already trailing 0-2 against the Glamour Boys when Barker made the substitution to bring in Nyiko Mobbie but now the stellies coach has come out to explain his reason for the change of substitution.

Steve Barker had a change of heart.

“The intention was to bring on Ryan (Moon) and for the fact that we were losing the game. I had a chat with him at half time and told him if things don’t change in 10 or 15 minutes he will get an opportunity, but unfortunately our right back Chris Bergman suffered a groin injury and then I used that substitute to rather give Nyiko Mobbie a chance,” said Barker, whose side lost 4-0 to Amakhosi.

“He’s coming back from injury… so I needed him to play to see his readiness for Saturday.

“I called Ryan aside to tell him that unfortunately he would have loved to play against his old team I’m sure, but it didn’t work out that way because of the injury (to Bergman).”
