Bayern Munich wants to keep Cameroonian striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting beyond the 2020/21 season.
The European summer transfer window is four months away, but Bayern has already started preparing for next season. The German champions are looking to sort out the short-term and long-term futures of various key players before the end of the current campaign.
Choupo-Moting is one of the players that will be out of contract soon.
According to German publication Sport1, the Munich club has been pleased with the impact of the striker since joining on a free transfer. The club has also been impressed by his professionalism in training despite being a squad rotation player.
Hansi Flick would like the experienced forward to stay at the club and extend his one-year deal that he signed in October 2020 and the reports suggest that talks between both parties regarding an extension are likely to take place soon.
He has been involved in three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions this season. Most of the time, he has come on for small cameos when Flick has been looking to give Robert Lewandowski some rest when the game is done and dusted.
If Bayern decide to give the 31-year-old another one-year contract extension, then youngster Joshua Zirkzee will likely go out on loan as he looks to get more first team minutes under his belt.
The Dutch striker impressed last season although he had limited opportunities, but he has found it difficult to get game time this season.
Now, more than ever, Flick needs to take the workload off Lewandowski who is not getting any younger. Choupo-Mouting provides the much-needed presence while bringing in a lot of experience upfront when the Polish hitman is rested.
Last season, the former Mainz 05 forward played a significant part for Paris Saint-Germain as they went all the way to the final of the Uefa Champions League.
