Bafana Bafana’s Bongani Zungu will miss Sunday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations clash against Sudan at Orlando Stadium on Sunday.
Zungu, who’s struggling with a knee injury, was forced off the field after just 29 minutes into Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to Ghana on Thursday night at Cape Coast Sports Stadium. He was replaced by Thapelo Morena.
The 27-year-old midfielder underwent knee surgery after a harsh blow that he received in a Ligue 1 match when Amiens took on Saint-Etienne in 2018. The knee ligament injury ruled him out for the rest of that season and he’s just made a return.
Zungu made his return to the national team in the Afcon 2019 in Egypt and was arguably SA’s best player at the tournament.
Bafana mentor Molefi Ntseki has confirmed that they will be without the star midfielder when they take on Sudan.
“I think we saw everybody in this camp will be available for Sunday, except for Bongani Zungu who got a knee injury,” confirmed Ntseki.
Ntseki, meanwhile, also explained the substitutions he made later in the match.
Heading into the second half and trailing by a goal, he brought in Lebogang Mothiba to take over from Bradley Grobler.
He then used his final change of the game to make another attacking change in the closing stages of the game opting to bring on Kermit Erasmus for Thembinkosi Lorch
“When we substituted Lorch it was for a tactical purpose, because we wanted to bring in a striker in Kermit Erasmus and I think when he came in he played more as a 10 between the lines and we had Lebo Mothiba at the top and overloading,” explained Ntseki.
“It happens in football , if you overload it means you are creating your own opportunities that side, but I think Ghana dealt well with the overloading,” Ntseki added.
