Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy has slammed referee of the season Abongile Tom after their 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Kaizer Chiefs.
Amakhosi triumphed at Cape Town Stadium, where the former Bafana Bafana was hopping mad as he took aim at Tom.
Speaking to the media after the game McCarthy said the referee wanted to prove a point that despite being a Cape-born referee, he wasn’t going to make things easy for the Mother City side.
“The referee was terrible today, he may as well have just put on a Kaizer Chiefs shirt,” said McCarthy.
“And then I hear he’s from Cape Town so he wanted to prove a point that he was not being bias. But I think he forced the issue a little bit. He was wanted to prove a point that he’s from Cape Town and that’s it.”
McCarthy also spoke about how he was shocked that Chiefs forward Lebogang Manyama finished the game after he almost ended Man of the Match Craig Martin’s seasom with a career ending tackle.
“They (Chiefs) should have been 2 players less, but the referee let them off the hook. The Lebo (Manyama) tackle, that’s sending Martin to hospital… season over, he gives him a yellow card and then he warns our player.
“The referees were useless today, no wonder Chiefs won. The referee, it was a one-way traffic as it has always been for Kaizer Chiefs in their last few games”.
