Zimbabwean international Khama Billiat is backing irrepressible Kaizer Chiefs mentor Gavin Hunt to bring home the bacon, saying he is a “great coach who knows how to win.”
Billiat is eager to make an early impression on the former Bidvest Wits coach, who has clinched the Premiership title four times with several domestic cup competitions under his belt.
“I’ve always wanted to work with him [coach Hunt]. He makes players feel happy and that’s what we needed. You can feel it at training‚ there is a different energy,” said Billiat.
‘The Glamour Boys’ have been going through a trophy drought for the past five years and many believe Hunt has the ability to mastermind a league title push.
Stuart Baxter was the last man to deliver the goods for Chiefs back in the 2014/15 season. Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas and Ernst Middendorp couldn’t replicate the Scotsman’s efforts with Hunt now the new coach in charge.
“We have seen him‚ while coaching other clubs‚ that no player is ever guaranteed to play. He’s a coach who brings the best out of you‚” added Billiat.
Chiefs have been training after the players had a break for about two weeks with the new campaign set to start on October 17 with the MTN8 quarterfinals. The Premiership opening matches will commence on October 24.
The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns star is confident that Hunt will help him get back to his “best”.
“We had a good [2019/20] season as a team. We came so close to winning the league. It means that we have the soldiers and the capacity to succeed. We have to challenge ourselves to do just a bit more.
“A new coach will bring in different things, which is good. Challenges always bring the best out of us, players. We all want to do better than last season,” concluded Billiat.
