Brighton and Hove Albion are close to signing Red Bull Salzburg midfielder, Enock Mwepu.
Mwepu has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe and in a quick turn of events, the Seagulls have emerged as favourites to land the charismatic anchor’s signature.
Brighton are trying to bring the 23-year-old Zambian international to the Premier League in a swoop similar to Leicester City’s signing of forward Patson Daka, his close friend and teammate at the Austrian champions.
The midfielder still has three years remaining on his contract with Salzburg. Reports suggest that Salzburg want a fee of around 20 million Euros to agree on selling the player.
Mwepu fits Brighton’s recruitment model of scouting around the globe for young talent at prices they can afford.
He joined Salzburg from Zambian club Kafue Celtic in 2017.
In 103 games for Salzburg, ‘Computer’ has scored 11 league goals for the Austrian outfit. He featured for them in the Champions League group stages last season against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, having made his debut in the competition the previous season in a 4-3 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield Stadium.
On the international stage, the dynamic midfielder has established himself as the centre of the Zambian national team. He made his debut in 2017 and has since gone on to make 16 appearances for the Chipolopolo. Although his generation have yet to make their mark at senior level, they won the U20 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil in 2017.
With Fashion Sakala recently completing a move to Glasgow Rangers and Patson Daka moving to Leicester, this group of players still have a lot to prove in a Zambian shirt.
