Brighton and Hove Albion coach Graham Potter has opened up about releasing Percy Tau for the Olympics.
Tau was recently named in coach David Notoane’s 40 men preliminary squad for the global event, which is scheduled to be played later this year. The former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker is one of seven over-aged players that have been included in the squad.
Each country is allowed to select a maximum of three over-aged players in the team and Tau is in pole position to make the cut.
Speaking ahead of Brighton’s clash against Chelsea on Tuesday night, Potter said he will release the South African if he is named in the final team.
“I think it is something we will speak with Percy. If a player is selected for his country, we are happy for that.
“We should support that. It’s a big moment for him in his career and his family. So I would say yes, I would be happy for him.
“And then it’s about what he wants to do as well.”
After returning from international duty, Tau was forced to miss the club’s previous two league games due to a mandatory 10 day quarantine.
The draw for the Olympics will take place on the 21st of April in Zurich and South Africa is in port 3 alongside Egypt, Ivory Coast and New Zealand.
