Shaun Bartlett was a prolific scorer during his time at Bafana Bafana and the TS Galaxy assistant coach believes the highly-rated Ethan Brooks is a force to be reckoned with but still ‘has a lot to learn.’
Brooks is part of the Bafana squad set to compete in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Ghana.
And Barlett, who works with the 20-year-old Brooks at Galaxy has given the Galaxy star some advice.
“It is always great to get a national team call-up. It shows that you’ve been doing well for your club. It is a nice reward at a young age. When you get into the squad, it is also about making sure that you learn from the more experienced players,” said Bartlett, who made 74 appearances for Bafana.
“That will put him in a better position. It will ensure that he becomes a better player. On the flip side, becoming a national team player, you have to show when you get back to your team that you are on a different level. He has a good head on his shoulders,” he added.
The former striker has been impressed by the attacker’s performances over the last few months for ‘The Rockets’ and Bafana. Brooks recently inspired Bafana Bafana to glory in the Cosafa Cup.
“He is very steady on his approach and life in general on and off the field. I think that counts a lot. I don’t think he should put a lot of pressure on himself. He is still young and has a lot to learn. For me, it is all about making sure that I can help him as much as I can by giving him a little bit of advice where I can,” said the Galaxy assistant mentor.
“Going forward, I believe that he will be a good contributor towards what we want to achieve as a club as far as success goes. When he comes, let us hope he comes back injury-free.
“To sustain longevity in the national team, you have to make sure that you continue doing well for your club. You can’t just play well for the national team and go back to your team and not do well.
“For him to get another call-up, he has to be consistent in his performances for TS Galaxy. With his abilities, he can also benefit our results. For the national team, it is always about wearing that shirt with pride and giving 110% and the public will appreciate that.” concluded Bartlett.
