Orlando Pirates have been ruthless in cup games – firing on all cylinders with 14 goals across nine cup competition encounters, while in the DStv Premiership Josef Zinnbauer’s men have only netted 15 goals in 18 league clashes.
In their most recent game, the ‘Buccaneers’ thrashed Maritzburg United 3-1 in the Nedbank Cup last 16 at Harry Gwala Stadium and will look to build on their cup victory when they square up against Bloemfontein Celtic in a league encounter at Orlando Stadium in Soweto this afternoon (17:00).
Pirates coach Zinnbauer said his troops would have to kick on in order to get their league campaign back on track – transfer their outstanding scoring form in cup matches to league Premiership.
“We need goals in the league because we do well in the Caf Confederation games and in the Nedbank Cup [in terms of scoring many goals]. It is time we take our cup form to the league,” said the German mentor.
“I don’t know what the difference is but as a coach you always want top performance in every game. Maybe it is because the cup games are a once-off thing and there’s pressure to win such games.”
The Soweto giants have amassed eight draws this campaign, which second-highest number of stalemates – behind Swallows thus far but Zinnbauer insists that all is not lost yet as the league is highly competitive.
They are also enjoying a six-match unbeaten run in all competitions and find themselves placed fourth on the league standings – a point behind third-placed Swallows, who have two games in hand.
