Cameroon trip for Chiefs in CAF

The SA PSL 2019/20 runners-up Kaizer Chiefs were on Monday handed a tough draw in the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

Amakhosi will start their journey in Africa against Cameroonian champions PWD Bamenda in the preliminary round while Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have been given a bye through to the second round of the Champions League in the 2020/21 season.

Both Chiefs and debutants Bamenda have much to prove in club continental football with the winner set to face 2018 semifinalists and Angolan champions Primeiro de Agosto.

Despite being considered a big team, Chiefs have never reached the group stages in five appearances with success eluding them since winning the league title five years ago under Stuart Baxter.

Meanwhile, Sundowns will take on the winner of the Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana or the Comoros Island champions US Zilimadjou in the second round.

In the Confederation Cup, Orlando Pirates have been handed a bye and will meet the winner of the match between Angola’s Sagrada Esperance and Eswatini’s entrants, who are yet to be named.

Nedbank Cup 2020 finalists Bloemfontein Celtic will play against AS Maniema of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Should Siwelele advance, they face either Futuro United from Equatorial Guinea or River Kings from Nigeria in the second round.

Preliminary round matches are scheduled for 27-29 November and 4-6 December. Teams in the last 32 stage will play on 22-23 December and 5-6 January.

The 16 winning teams in the two qualifying rounds go into a separate draw for the group phase.
