Ajax Agree to pay £6.5m compensation for Nouri

Ajax Amsterdam have reached a settlement agreement with Abdelhak Nouri’s family and to retire his jersey number 34.

This comes after Nouri’s family sued the club after the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest during a friendly match against Werder Bremen back in July 2017.

However, both parties have now agreed on an amicable settlement, instead of going to the KNVB (Dutch FA’s) arbitration committee.

It has been reported that an investigation found medics spent too long trying to clear his airways and were too late in using a defibrillator.

Nouri was a youth product of Eredivisie club Ajax, played two years of senior football with its reserve team and the first team.

“It is good that an agreement has been reached so that we can conclude this,” said Ajax general manager Edwin van der Sar.

“We all realise that the suffering for Abdelhak, and his loved ones, is not over. It remains a very sad situation, that’s how we feel here at Ajax too.”
