Heracles defender uncertain about international future

A highly-rated defender is undecided about which country he wants to represent.

Heracles Almelo right back Noah Fadiga is uncertain about his international future as he qualifies to represent Senegal and Belgium.

Born in Bruges to Senegalese parents, the Club Brugge youth product has a difficult decision to make with both countries looking to rope him into their national team set-up.

Speaking to Belgian publication Last Hour Sports, the 22-year-old said he loves the African country, but he also has a strong connection with the country of his birth.

“Everyone knows the story of my father, I have affection for Senegal, my second homeland to which I return every winter and where I was asked to choose the Lions.

“It will not be easy to make a decision. I have to think about it, talk to my parents about it, but it will be my choice.”

Despite playing 32 games in the 2021/22 Eredivisie season, Fadiga could not help Heracles avoid relegation to the second tier of Dutch football.

A poor run of three consecutive losses saw Heracles end the season in sixteenth place, which condemned them to the promotion/relegation playoffs – the club were ultimately relegated after losing 6-1 to Excelsior Rotterdam on aggregate in the semi-final of the playoffs.

Senegal recently qualified for the 2022 Fifa World Cup scheduled to be played in Qatar later this year – this will be their third appearance at the global showpiece having previously qualified in 2002 and 2018.

Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia and Ghana are the other four African countries that will be at the tournament.
