Chelsea are on ‘borrowed time’, says culture secretary

Culture secretary Nadine Dorries reckons that Chelsea are on “borrowed time” over the club’s sale.

This comes after the Blues owner Roman Abramovich put the club on the market before the UK government sanctioned him for his alleged close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Chelsea are operating under a special licence from the UK government issued in March when Abramovich was sanctioned and ends on 31 May.

“There is a very short window left for that sale to take place,” Dorries told the BBC Newscast podcast.

“Chelsea’s being sold, as you know, and the sanctions apply, so those sanctions still apply during the sale.

“But what I will say, actually, is that Chelsea is very much on borrowed time at the moment.”

Dorries believes that the side will be sold “[within] weeks,” and any sale can only be signed off by the bidder passing the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test.

According to reports, there are currently three bidders in the running to buy Chelsea for about £2bn.
