South African teenager Kgaogelo Chauke is getting closer to making his senior debut for Southampton.
The midfielder was on the bench on Monday night as Southampton defeated Liverpool 1-0.
The 17-year-old was named in the senior team match day squad by Ralph Hasenhuttl for the first time in his career as he gets closer to making his senior team bow.
Chauke has been going through the ranks of the English Premiership club for the past three years and recently signed his first professional contract with the club in 2020.
Southampton manager Hasenhuttl has been showing a lot of faith in the youngster having included him in his pre-season preparations for the 2020/21 campaign.
The Saints are known for producing the best young talents with the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Adam Lallana and Victor Wanyama amongst some of the players who have gone through the academy over the years.
Southampton have started 2021 on a high with a big victory over the log leaders. The victory left Hasenhuttl on his knees after 90 minutes.
Former Liverpool striker Danny Ings returned to the match day squad and made a huge impact as his first half goal was enough to hand Southampton a big home victory.
The ‘Reds’ are still top of the table with 33 points from 19 games. Manchester United has the same number of points, but has an advantage of a game in hand. Southampton have moved up to sixth spot on the table with 29 points from 17 games.
Elsewhere in Europe, two more South Africans were in action for their respective clubs on Monday night. Thabo Cele played the entire 90 minutes for Cova di Piedade as they were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Porto B in the Portuguese Segunda Liga while Sphephelo Sithole got yet another start for SAD Belenenses playing 84 minutes as they earned a crucial point with an away 0-0 draw against Gil Vicente in the Primeira Liga.
