Kaizer Chiefs tried to bounce back from their demoralising loss in the MTN8 semifinal first leg but were ultimately not good enough as they drew 0-0 with TS Galaxy in a DStv Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.
After a cagey start, Galaxy had a good chance to take the lead as they were awarded a penalty after Kgotso Moleko’s tackle from behind on Lindokuhle Mbatha on 27 minutes but Wayde Lekay missed, hitting the woodwork.
Galaxy had another chance to open the scoring just before the half time break as Lekay played the ball to Karabo Tshepe, who narrowly missed the target as his effort sailed over the target.
Gavin Hunt’s men enjoyed most of the possession, but they struggled in the final third. In the 69th minute, Bernard Parker failed to hit the target from close range after being played through by Khama Billiat.
Amakhosi continued to press in search of a goal after 75 minutes of play but Leonardo Castro nodded his effort over the crossbar while Billiat’s effort went wide a few minutes later in what was a frustrating night for the Soweto side.
The Rockets had a golden opportunity to win the match with 13 minutes left on the clock as Mokete Mogaila failed to beat Daniel Akpeyi in a one-on-one situation.
That proved to be the last chance of the encounter as the Premiership rookies managed to secure a valuable point against the Glamour Boys.
The result leaves the Soweto giants with four points from their opening three league games and they are yet to score a goal as their only win, against Chippa United came via an own goal.
Chiefs will next tackle archrivals Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semifinal second leg at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
