Kaizer Chiefs were made to work hard for a 1-0 victory over a gallant Chippa United side at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday night.
Gavin Hunt’s men played with intent and registered their first win of the 2020/21 DStv Premiership season after countless attempts with over 20 shots at goal, ten of which were on target.
However, the goal didn’t come off a Chiefs player’s boot as Chippa defender Gregory Damons bundled the ball into his own net in the 77th minute to give Hunt’s charges a deserved lead.
With all the possession, territory and scoring chances, it can be said that Chippa were fortunate to go into half time at 0-0 because goalkeeper Veli Motha had to make a number of brilliant saves to keep the Chilli Boys in the game.
The Glamour Boys squandered far too many opportunities as they hit the woodwork four times in search of the winner before Damons scored the decisive own goal 13 minutes before the end.
It wasn’t pretty but Chiefs did enough to secure a much-needed victory following the news that their transfer ban appeal has been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) prior to their Chippa game.
