Samuel Chukwueze continued his influence for Villarreal with a crucial assist in the Uefa Europa League semi-final first leg against Arsenal on Thursday night.
The Yellow Submarine defeated the Gunners 2-1 at home to take a very crucial lead going into the second leg of the encounter and their on-form Nigerian winger was at the centre of the action at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
Unai Emery’s side controlled majority of the ball possession and used their home advantage well against their English visitors who struggled to deal with the technical superiority of their Spanish hosts. It took five minutes for Villarreal to open the scoring with Manu Trigueros smashing the ball home after some amazing work by Chukwueze down the right wing, 1-0.
The home side doubled the lead in the 29th minutes through veteran defender Raul Albion who sneaked in at the near post to tap home Gerard Moreno’s flicked header.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Ivorian winger Nicolas Pepe converted a penalty to give Mikel Arteta’s side a crucial away goal in the tie.
Emery will be pleased with the 2-1 win as he looks to win yet another Europa League trophy to add to the three he has already won in his illustrious career.
Chukwueze played the entire 90 minutes for the Yellow Submarine while Pepe was substituted in additional time for the Gunners.
Thomas Partey also lasted the entire game while Gabonese striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was introduced after 85 minutes, but couldn’t help Arsenal salvage a draw.
