Samuel Chukwueze has been nominated for the April Player of the Month award.

The Nigerian winger has had an impressive run both in the league and Uefa Europa League where he has helped the Yellow Submarine reach the semi-final stage of the competition.

He competes with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa, Real Betis’ Claudio Bravo and Sevilla’s Fernando who are all in the running for the award.

Chukwueze has netted three La Liga goals in five games for Unai Emery’s side and he also had an assist in their Europa League quarter-final clash against Dinamo Zagreb.

His three goals came against Levante and FC Barcelona. He netted a brace in a 5-1 win against Levante before scoring in Villarreal’s 2-1 defeat against Barcelona last Sunday.

Speaking after the nomination, Emery said the player deserves the award and he is a player that has been crucial for them in the second half of the season.

“He’s a very young player who has to find consistency.

“We need to take steps forward with him and be demanding. He’s a footballer with great quality. He has a lot of talent, but he needs to improve in front of goal.”

The Nigeria international has attributed his change of fortunes to the Spanish mentor saying he makes things easy for everyone to be at their best.

“I enjoy playing under Unai Emery. He’s amazing, and so tactical in everything he does. He can push you to the limit, but he is a fantastic coach.

“He has an amazing football brain. He has amazed me how I have seen him change things from game to game.

“Sometimes when I watch him from the bench, I have looked at him and noticed changes he makes which work for him that are great to see. He is so good at his job and is a fantastic coach.”

On Thursday evening, Villarreal will take on Arsenal in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final and the 21-year-old will be eager to continue his fine form.
